2008 Annual Meeting Will Explore Theme of "Well-Being,
Welfare and Health"
by
Kenneth C. Land
Duke University
NCSA President-Elect
Make a note on your calendar. We
invite you to attend the annual meeting of the North Carolina
Sociological Association which will be held at the Durham Hilton Hotel,
Durham, North Carolina, February 28 and 29, 2008.
The meeting will begin with a
reception Thursday evening at a nearby restaurant followed by a full
day, Friday, of stimulating sessions, the annual banquet luncheon and
awards ceremony, exhibits, and more. We look forward to hosting the
meetings. The Durham location is conveniently located near the center
of the state, and the NCSA has met there two times in recent years. The
accommodations and food are first rate. Parking is free and the hotel
has easy access to I-85.
The theme will be “Well-Being, Welfare
and Health.” Social changes, new waves of immigration, and welfare
reform continue to change the social landscape of American Society and
North Carolina in particular. Sessions will explore these topics. An
exciting program is in the making. To date, the following sessions are
under construction. Linda Burton is organizing a session on the
multi-city ethnographic study she and colleagues are doing on the
impacts of the welfare reforms of a decade ago; Dana Greene and Vicki
Lamb on Planning a Social Survey Project; Emilio Parrado on Latino
Immigration into North Carolina and HIV/AIDS Transmission; Rebecca Bach
on Teaching Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in Sociology courses; and Ken
Wilson on Graduate School and Job Opportunities for Sociology Majors.
Come
to Durham to enjoy the meetings, conversations, and good food with your
fellow sociology colleagues from around the state. Let’s celebrate our
explorations of the logics of social things!

NCSA Needs Web Master
At its most recent meeting, the Executive Council of the
NCSA received the resignation of Jammie Price from the post of
Web Master. George Conklin, who currently serves editor of SOCIATION
TODAY,
agreed to accept the post temporarily. Members of the Council are
seeking a permanent replacement for the position of web master.
The NCSA needs a dedicated individual to serve as web
master for its organizational website. The webmaster holds an unpaid,
appointive office and serves at the behest of the NCSA Executive Council
for an indeterminate term. Council members are seeking an individual who
can commit to serving at least 3 to 5 years in this capacity. The web
master is responsible for maintaining the organization’s website (www.ncsociology.org),
posting and updating materials as needed by the organization, as well as
checking and maintaining the various posted links and layers of the web
site. Experience with web design and HTML and available technical and
logistical support from the candidate’s home institution are strongly
recommended. Interested candidates may contact any member of the
Executive Council;
email addresses are listed on the website.
SOCIATION TODAY
PUBLISHES TENTH ISSUE
The Fall 2007 issue of Sociation Today will be our tenth
issue. It will contain the Presidential Address, two articles on urban
gentrification and a presentation of current Hispanic immigration
patterns in North Carolina. Also included will be an article on the
influence of community on the achievement of high school students.
We have added a menu to each issue and will be working on an index of
articles so, for example, all articles on teaching will be located
quickly in one place. One of the items now in the menu is the Max Weber
video which will be of interest to students taking principles of
sociology or theory courses. Our collection of urban sociology articles
can easily be assigned to an urban sociology class, as another example.
One of the goals of Sociation Today is to provide free materials
to sociology students in addition to providing scholarship to the field
of sociology as a whole. Sociation Today also continues to be
interested in articles on the use of the Web in teaching students. If
you use Web-based materials in classes, please consider writing up your
experiences and including your suggested links.
The link for authors considering materials for submission to
Sociation Today is: < http://www.ncsociology.org/sociationtoday/journal.htm>
Please consider Sociation Today for your next research or teaching
project. And, yes, remember to assign our articles to students when you
do your course outlines!

Student Poster Presentations Needed for 2008 Meeting
At
the 2008 Annual Meeting of the NCSA (Feb. 28-29 in Durham), we will have
one of our three meeting rooms set aside for two things: coffee breaks
and posters. The NCSA Executive Committee wants to fill the room with
poster presentations by students for attendees to view between sessions
while they have coffee and other refreshments.
Therefore, we hereby solicit your submissions of poster topics for
presentation. Indeed, it is possible for faculty instructors and
advisors from various institutions to organize groups of student poster

kland@soc.duke.edu As the time for the annual meeting approaches,
we will organize the submissions into groups for presentations at
designated times.

Heiger
Resigns as Recording Secretary

from the position of recording secretary as of the February 2008 Annual
