RCC Student Blackboard FAQ

What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is an educational software platform that provides a web-based means for taking online classes. With Blackboard you can access your class any time or place that you have an Internet connection.

What do I need to take an online Blackboard course?

1. A computer (one that you can access frequently and work on for an extended period of time) with an Internet connection.

MINIMUM COMPUTER SYSTEM AND BROWSER REQUIREMENTS

2. An e-mail account and program capable of reading and sending file attachments, such as your Eudora, Microsoft Outlook, Hotmail or Yahoo mail.

3. A word processing software application (such as Microsoft Word or Open Office Writer) installed on your computer.

Other recommendations:

For best results with AOL:

  • Connect to the Internet using AOL version 4.0 or higher.
  • Open a private chat within AOL (this allows the AOL client to remain open, without asking if you wish to disconnect while minimized).
  • Minimize AOL.
  • Launch a supported browser (see the above table).

I use AOL (America Online) at home and I am having problems accessing Blackboard.

The web browser built into AOL is not always able to use Blackboard properly. If you use AOL as your Internet Service Provider and experience difficulties accessing Blackboard, try following these instructions:

  • Activate your dialup or broadband connection with AOL.
  • Minimize your AOL window once it has connected.
  • Open Microsoft Internet Explorer (there should be a blue E icon for this perhaps on your desktop or quick launch bar).
  • Type in the address bar (do NOT use a bookmark) http://rockinghamcc.blackboard.com and press Enter.

How do I access Blackboard online courses?

Using a supported web browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer), go to http://rockinghamcc.blackboard.com and enter your user name and password; click the Login button.

Below is the new format that students will need to use to login to their account.

The user name/login ID is comprised of Last Name, First Initial, Last Four Digits of your Datatel ID Number. For example, John Doe with an ID number of 00123456 would have a Login ID of: DOEJ3456. Your Datatel ID number is located on your new student ID card.

The initial password is your birth date without slashes. If John Doe were born on July 4th, 1976, the password for his login ID is: 070476 (Please note that only the last two digits of the year are required.)

Very Important: After you log in successfully, change your password and double-check to see whether or not you have an RCC e-mail address. You may do this in the My Institution area, under Tools and Personal Information. Failure to do so could make your account accessible by unauthorized users and sending e-mail impossible.

Do I have separate logins for multiple classes?

No, once you have a user name and password, you will use the same user name and password for all classes. However, under certain circumstances, an instructor may require that you to have another login/user name.

I submitted an assignment, but the instructor cannot find it.

The Assignment interface has a "Save" and a "Submit" button. "Save" means that you will continue to work on the assignment, and will retain the ability to withdraw, add, or replace files. Once you click "Submit", you can't do this anymore, and can't re-try the assignment either. It is only at this stage that the instructor sees your assignment as submitted and can download it for grading. So go back in and click "Submit"!

I added a file to the Digital Drop Box, but my instructor says that he/she didn't get it. What happened?

Using the Digital Drop Box can be a two-step process. If you use the Add button, you add the file to your own digital drop box only. You must then click on the Send button to add it to your instructor's digital drop box. Alternatively, you can just click the Send button to do both steps together and send the file to both yours and your instructor's digital drop boxes simultaneously.

How do I use the Digital Drop Box?

Adding a file to the drop box only deposits the file in your own Drop Box. No one else has access to it.

Sending a file to the drop box requires specifying the recipient of the file. The file will be in your own Drop Box and the Drop Box of the recipient.

Note: Once a file is sent, the file cannot be removed from the recipient's Drop Box.

I just recently dropped a course. Why does it still appear in Blackboard?

Students are not automatically deleted from Blackboard. In order to be removed from a Blackboard course, you must contact the instructor to manually remove you.

My courses from previous semesters still show up. How can I delete them from my list of courses on My Blackboard page?

Send an e-mail to Technology Support Services (TSS) and ask them to make the course "Unavailable”. Email:  evansc@rockinghamcc.edu

Can I use my Hotmail or Yahoo email address in Blackboard? Why is this important?

At present time, Rockingham Community College requires all students use their campus email addresses associated with their Blackboard account because your professors will send you email to that address in Blackboard. If you don't use the email address that is registered with Blackboard, you will miss important information from your professor! When your account was created in Blackboard, the default email address used was your Rockingham Community College email.

Top

Why doesn't my email address show up in the class roster?

Your email address will be kept private unless you specify that you want it to be shared with other students in your class. To make your email address visible, click "Personal Information" in the Tools area of your Blackboard  page. Click "Set Privacy Options," choose the information that you would like to have visible to others, and hit "Submit."

When I log in to Blackboard, I don't see my class listed.

Please be aware that many instructors do not use Blackboard at all, or do not make their course sites available to students until after the semester has started. If you aren't certain whether your class is going to be using Blackboard, please speak with your instructor.
