Sociology of the Family 3-0-3 Course Description: This course covers the institution of the family and other intimate relationships. Emphasis is placed on mate selection, gender roles, sexuality, communication, power and conflict, parenthood, diverse lifestyles, divorce and remarriage, and economic issues. Upon completion, students should be able to analyze the family as a social institution and the social forces which influence its development and change. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in social/behavioral sciences. Prerequisite: ENG 090, REA 090 |

| Course Objectives:Upon
completion of this course students will be able to: · compare and contrast various types of family structures and forms · define marriage and discuss its varied forms in different societies · distinguish major theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of marriage and family · identify current trends with respect to marriage rate, divorce rate, remarriage rate, household composition, age at marriage, age at birth of child, family size, and other demographic variables pertaining to family issues · describe the historical and cross-cultural patterns of changes in marriage and family life and analyze trends among societies · discuss the important elements in the formation of relationships, including issues such as romance, jealousy, trust, the single life, and the dynamics of married life · describe what is involved in maintaining relationships, including such issues as dual-career marriages, family finances, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS, infidelity, and mature sexuality · discuss the transition from marriage to family, the dynamics of parenting, the consequences of divorce and remarriage, and the problems facing individuals in the later years of life · describe the emerging patterns in American family life and predict future trends |
