
Currently enrolled RCC curriculum students may check out laptops for in-library use only. To check out a laptop, bring a RCC picture ID with the current semester sticker and a driver's license to the checkout counter, and read and sign the Laptop User Agreement form. Laptop users must comply with the college Acceptable Use Policy for the Internet. The late fee is $5 per hour, and there is no grace period.

Q. Why would I want to check out a laptop? A. You can access Webcat, NCLive and other research databases, Blackboard course pages, and the Internet.
Q. Can I reserve a laptop in advance? A. No.
Q. What is the checkout period for laptops? A. The checkout period is two hours. End-of-the-day checkouts must be returned 15 minutes before closing. Overdue laptops accrue overdue fines of $10.00 per hour with a maximum fine of $100. There is no grace period. Any laptop that is 24 hours overdue will be declared lost; a total charge of $1,910.00 will be immediately billed to the user’s account . ($1,800 lost/replacement fee, $100 overdue billing fee and $10 processing fee). If a user returns the laptop in good condition, the replacement cost will be dropped but the overdue fees remain.
Q. Are renewals allowed? A. Laptops may be renewed if there is no one waiting for a laptop to be returned.
Q. How can I access the library's wireless network? A. The laptop wireless card is pre-set for browsing; double-click on the Internet Explorer or Firefox icons to start.
Q. Does the library offer technical support for laptops? A. No; it is assumed that if you checkout a laptop you can operate it without help.
Q. How do I save my work? A. Files should not be stored on the hard drive. All files saved on the hard drive will be removed when the laptop is powered off or rebooted. Save any files by e-mailing the document as an attachment to an e-mail account or save to the USB Drive or CD. Any files saved to the hard drive will not be retained.
Q. Does the library sell Flash Drives? A. No; you can purchase Flash Drives or other storage media at the college bookstore, local merchants, or online.
Q. How long will the battery on a laptop last? A. Battery life depends on previous use, turnaround time on checkouts, the age of the battery, and other factors. You should save any work on a regular basis. At the first warning of low power (the low power warning appears in the bottom right corner of the screen), save your work to some place other than the laptop hard drive and use the power cord until your time with the laptop is complete. The Library accepts no responsibility for files lost or damaged while using the laptop equipment. The library is not responsible for loss of data due to battery failure.
Q. What software is already available on the laptop? A. Our laptops are equipped with the Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional Edition (SP2) Operating System with MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Front Page, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can save work on a diskette, CD, or a USB Flash drive.
Q. Can I watch movies or listen to music? A. Yes, but you will need to provide your own headphones and keep volume levels low. Laptop users must comply with the college Acceptable Use Policy for the Internet.
Q. Can I print materials? A. At this time printing is not available on the wireless network. Save any files by e-mailing the document as an attachment to an e-mail account or save to the USB Drive or CD.
Q. Can I use a laptop to take a Blackboard course exam? A. No. Wireless signal strength can vary.
Q. May I add additional software to the laptop? A. No. The only download exception is textbook CD-ROM software for RCC classes.
Q. Am I responsible for theft or damage to the laptop? A. The borrower is solely responsible for the laptop checkout; do not leave a laptop unattended. Borrowers will reimburse Gerald B. James Library for the reasonable cost of repairs or parts replacement due to damage or loss of equipment occurring while the laptop is checked out to the borrower. If a laptop is damaged beyond repair during checkout, the borrower will reimburse Gerald B. James Library in an amount equal to the replacement cost of the equipment; not less than $1910.00 ($1,800 lost/replacement fee, $100 overdue billing fee and $10 processing fee). The borrower will cooperate in filing and processing appropriate insurance claims with either Gerald B. James Library insurers or the borrower's insurers.
Checkout may be denied to students who abuse equipment or repeatedly return laptops late.
