Application for Admission
To apply for a space for a child, parents/guardians will complete a request for enrollment form. The form will be available from the Manager, Program Specialist, or the Building Secretary and should be returned to the Manager’s office. Parents/guardians will be notified in writing when there is space for their child and asked if they choose to accept the space. A $50 registration fee and a $40 supply fee will accompany the completed enrollment packet. This fee is non-refundable should the parent/guardian later decline the space. Checks should be made payable to Rockingham Community College Child Development Center.

Priority
The first priority will be given to parents/guardians who are students at RCC. Next, spaces will be offered to parents/guardians who are faculty or staff of RCC. Finally, spaces will be offered to parents/guardians from Rockingham County and surrounding areas.

Note: If parents request consideration for financial assistance, they should apply through the Rockingham County Department of Social Services, the Rockingham Community College Financial Aid Office, or the Rockingham County Head Start program.

Children will initially be assigned to a class based upon chronological age and developmental needs. Any necessary adjustments in placement will be made following assessment of the child’s development and a parent/guardian consultation.

Children must have a complete physician-signed medical form before being enrolled. Children will not be accepted without a current physician-signed medical form. The medical form is available as part of the enrollment packet.

Inclement Weather Policy
Rockingham Community College Child Development Center will follow the same weather-closing schedule as the College. If during the workday the weather becomes severe enough to close the college, the Child Development Center will also close. We want to get the children, parents, and teachers home safely. Please listen to the radio. If inclement weather has been forecast, there will be a form in each classroom to write emergency contact numbers in case of early dismissal.

When the college’s regular schedule must be adjusted due to inclement weather, information will be provided to as many of the following media sources as possible:

WXII TV - Channel 12 Winston
WKZL FM (107.5) Winston WXLV TV - Channel 45 Greensboro

WJMH FM (102.1) Greensboro WGHP TV - Channel 8 High Point
WTQR FM (104.1) Winston WUA TV - Channel 14 Reidsville

An effort will be made to make announcements prior to 6:00 a.m. When delay of opening or closing announcements are made, they will affect all college programs and activities scheduled on or off campus. Faculty and staff or administration will be affected according to the revised policy established last year.
We will not announce when the college will operate as usual.
Please avoid confusion by listening carefully to one of the above stations on days of inclement weather.

Awards
On June 13, 2003, the RCC Child Development Center was chosen as one of 12 statewide winners of the North Carolina Early Childhood Professional Development Award. The annual award recognizes a North Carolinian who has provided leadership and support to the field of early childhood care and education.

When child care programs apply for the Early Childhood Professional Development Award, they have to share information about the opportunities they promote in their facilities for staff members to achieve goals related to professional development. They also have to submit letters of support from parents of enrolled children.

Curriculum
Children need a wealth of opportunities and experiences to help them understand their world. Many topics can be included in the core curriculum for a good child development program. The curriculum for the children will include activities in the developmental areas of language, gross motor, fine motor, cognitive and social skills. These areas are integrated into the child’s day within the child’s play. Allowances for individual differences and special interests will be made since a good program for a child’s early years is ever changing and flexible. The curriculum model we are using is the Creative Curriculum.

Children need to be as self-reliant as they are able to be. Educators such as Dewey and Montessori have recognized that children learn by doing--cutting, painting, walking, patting, squeezing, building, rolling, scraping, etc. By providing the appropriate types of materials and activities for the children, we promote a perception of the wider world and foster life skills.
