For Tutors
Would you like to change the world? Try
helping an adult learn how to read.
Imagine not being able to read.
20-30% of Rockingham County adults have
only basic reading skills. The Rockingham Community College Literacy
Project is somewhere that adults can go to learn, but they need your
help.
What is special about the Literacy Project?
The Literacy Project uses volunteer tutors
to work one-on-one with adults on a regular basis to help them reach
their goals. Students may want to learn to read, or to read better:
to get a driver's license, to pass the GED test, or to pursue a new
job or promotion. International students may want to learn English,
or to improve their English skills.
Why is there a need for volunteers to tutor adults in reading?
Many adults cannot read because of:
learning differences or disabilities, sight and hearing
difficulties, missing too much school, being moved from school to
school, not receiving enough one-on-one attention, or dropping out
of school to get married or go to work.
What is required of volunteers?
·Enjoy being with and helping people
·Have an hour or two a week to spare
·Attend a training workshop
·Keep a monthly calendar
How can you get involved?
Call Jean Light Kinyon at 336-342-4261,
ext. 2352.
ESL (English as a Second Language) tutors are also needed.
