History of Phi Theta Kappa

Founded in 1918 in Missouri, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is now recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official honor society for two-year colleges. In 1993, Phi Theta Kappa inducted its 1,000,000th member. Currently, the organization has more than 1,200 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, Germany, and Japan.

The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to promote the four hallmarks: leadership, scholarship, fellowship, and service. Phi Theta Kappans develop lifelong leadership skills by taking initiative and sharing responsibilities. Members also embrace scholarship through the pursuit of education and wisdom, and nurture fellowship through the promotion of the spirit of unity and assistance. They serve fellow students, faculty, and community to recognize the value of giving.

Phi Theta Kappa has teamed up with more than 470 senior institutions in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada to develop a Transfer Scholarship Program that currently offers approximately $ 36 million annually in transfer scholarships designated exclusively for Society members. Some scholarships range up to full tuition.
