By-laws for Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter
Of
Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society

 


Chapter I. Name and Purpose

Section 1. The name of the chapter of Phi Theta Kappa shall be Alpha Kappa Pi.

Section 2. The objective of the Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter, in addition to those specified in Article II of the International Constitution, shall be to promote the intellectual atmosphere of Rockingham Community College and as well, serve Rockingham Community College.

Chapter II. Election of Officers.

Section 1. The election will be held before regional convention and nominations shall be made from the floor.

Section 2. The officers will be President, Vice-President of Leadership, Vice-President of Service, Vice-President of Scholarship, Vice-President of Fellowship, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer, Web Site Coordinator.

Chapter III. Chapter Officers

Section 1. In addition to the chapter officers specified in Chapter II, Section 2 of the International Constitution, Communications Officer, Public Relations Historian, shall be elected (Chapter II, Section 3.)

Section 2. The President, Vice-President of Leadership, Recording Secretary, and Treasurer will carry out the normally assigned duties of these officers in any organization.

Section 3. The Recording Secretary will also be responsible for providing a year-end report to the Regional Office and International Office.

Section 4. The Public Relations Officer's duties shall be to furnish all pertinent information and reports to the Regional and International offices, prepare press releases whenever possible to be released through the College's Director of Community Relations to all area newspapers, as well as other chapter publicity.

Section 5. The Public Relations Historian's duties will center on the production of a complete, comprehensive, and unique Yearbook for the chapter. The Yearbook information (clippings, photographs, etc.) will be kept up to date throughout the year and the Yearbook will be displayed at all conventions.

Section 6. The Vice-President of Scholarship's duties will be to organize and oversee all honors topic activities.

Section 7. The Vice-President of Service's duties will be to oversee the International Service Program activities, and encourage volunteerism and community service.

Section 8. The Vice-President of Fellowship's duties will be to organize and oversee all fellowship activities, encourage scholarly fellowship, and implement new ways to increase membership and meeting attendance.

Section 8. All officers of Alpha Kappa Pi must be students in good standing with Rockingham Community College.

Section 9. The officers of the local chapter shall be known as the Executive Committee.

Section 10. A chapter officer failing to serve and perform his or her prescribed duties as outlined in the International Constitution (Chapter IV, Section 4) and the Chapter By-Laws (Chapter III, Section 1-9) will be subject to a vote to be removed from office. A three-fourths (3/4) vote of total voting membership will be required for removal from office. In any case when an officer must resign his/her office, an election shall be held to elect a new officer. Nominations shall be made from the floor and will be made at the first meeting following the resignation of the officer. The election will be held at the first meeting following nominations. Plurality of the votes cast will determine the new officer. The president shall have the power to make a temporary appointment at his/her discretion until an election can be held.

Chapter IV. Membership

Section 1. Eligible students will be considered for membership in the Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

Section 2. An invitation to join Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa will be issued only one time to a prospective member. However, the Executive Committee may choose to recommend to the general membership that an individual be issued a second invitation. If a prospective member declines the initial invitation and wishes to join later, he/she must also meet eligibility requirements at that time.

Section 3. To be eligible for active membership in the organization, prospective members must have completed 12 semester hours of college level course work and must have a cumulative major grade point average of 3.5, as well as demonstrated good citizenship, brotherhood, service, and show leadership potential.

Section 4. A daytime member must carry at least 6 hours each semester. An evening member must carry at least 3 hours each semester. However, during the last term prior to completion of his or her program of study, a member may carry the number of hours required for graduation.

Section 5. If a member's major grade point average drops below a cumulative 3.00 for a semester, the member shall have one semester to bring his or her cumulative grade point average to the required standard. If the member fails to do so, he or she shall automatically be dropped from the chapter and the international membership.

Section 6. All members must be students in good standing of Rockingham Community College.

Section 7. The induction of members will be no later than two weeks into the last month of the term.

Section 8. The selection of honorary members will be based upon the ideal set forth in the International Constitution as well as outstanding service rendered to the Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter and Rockingham Community College.

Chapter V. Dues

Section 1. International dues for all members shall be $45.00. This fee will be paid only once (at induction.)

Section 2. Regional dues for all members shall be $5.00. This fee will be paid only once (at induction.)

Section 3. Local dues for all members shall be $10.00. This fee will be paid only once (at induction.)

Chapter VI. Committees.

Section 1. There shall be an Executive Committee of the Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. This committee will consist of the officers (Chapter 3. Section 1-8). This committee will give attention to those that require constant attention and planning.

Section 2. The Executive Committee will report to the general membership for the purpose of information and implementation.

Section 3. The Executive Committee will meet biweekly with the advisor(s).

Section 4. The Chapter President will appoint all other committees as deemed appropriate.

Chapter VII. Meetings

Section 1. Regular meetings of the Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter shall be held as determined by the Executive committee. This meeting will be reported at the beginning of each term to the appropriate college official for scheduling.

Section 3. A member of the Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is encouraged not to miss more than three meetings during the academic year.

Section 4. Special planning meetings shall be scheduled and held in the summer prior to the coming academic year to develop goals and structure any activities of the organization for the coming year. The Chapter President must chair these meetings.

Chapter VIII. Programs and Activities

Section 1. All chapter programs shall be planned by the Chapter 1st Vice-President and an Advisor. These programs will always be in line with the International Honors Study Topic.

Section 2. Fund-raising, service, and other activities, after being approved through the appropriate college channels, will be presented by the Executive Committee to the entire chapter for final approval and implementation. This does not preclude activities being initiated and planned by the chapter at its regularly scheduled meetings.

Chapter IX. Advisors

Section 1. Advisors for the Alpha Kappa Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa shall be appointed by the college.

Section 2. The chapter advisor can veto any activities planned an/or develop by the chapter if these activities are deemed to be detrimental to the Phi Theta Kappa and/or Rockingham Community College.

Chapter X. Amendments

The chapter by-laws can be amended at any chapter meeting by three-fourths (3/4) vote of the members attending.
