This course prepares individuals to maintain natural surface trails with hand tools.  Coursework includes basic, intermediate, and advanced trail maintenance skills.  Upon completion, the student should be able to use a variety of hand tools to maintain natural surface sustainable and traditional trails.

Learning Objectives - 

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to identify, use, and maintain hand tools used in trail maintenance.
  • Identify common trail maintenance problems and their solutions.
  • Recognize a variety of surface water control measures used on natural surface trails.
  • Demonstrate basic, intermediate, and advanced trail maintenance techniques using hand tools.

Course Length -

Lecture:  4 hours

Lab/Fieldwork:  4 hours


Trail maintenance tools will be provided for student use.

Students should bring their own lunch, snacks, and plenty of drinking water.

Students must dress appropriately for trailwork - gloves, safety glasses, long pants, and closed-toe shoes (boots preferred).
