CAREER COUNSELING

The goal of Career Counseling is to provide individuals with the information and skills
necessary to make good career/life decisions and to develop a plan for how they can
get from where they are to where they want to be.

RCC’s on-site Career Counseling involves individual sessions with a National Certified Counselor (NCC) or a National Certified Career Counselor (NCCC). All information shared is confidential and does not become a part of an academic file.

THE CAREER/LIFE PLANNING PROCESS INVOLVES:

SELF-ASSESSMENT – understanding your interests, abilities, skills and limitations, values, personal
preferences, goals and desired lifestyle as they relate to the World of Work. Assessment inventories, tests and check-sheets are used and interpreted to generate career possibilities. Click on highlighted area for additional information.

CAREER RESEARCH – gathering career data and information on specific careers about job duties, skills needed, education/training required, realities of the job market, responsibilities and activities involved, salary and growth potential. A library of career resources is available to evaluate compatible career possibilities. Click on highlighted area for additional information.

TRAINING/EDUCATION – learning about the training/education requirements and pathways such as: nature of the training, typical career directions, costs (time and monetary), opportunities for experiential learning, type of courses (degree of difficulty), where training is offered. A library of training resources is available to evaluate how you can reach your goal. Contact Jane Norwood, Career Counselor, at 342-4262, ext. 2117 or send e-mail to: hawkinsl@rockinghamcc.edu

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can you tell me what I ought to be? What careers will provide me with security in the future?
Counselors do not have a crystal ball enabling them to know what will be best for individuals or what the future job market will be like. What we do have are skills, abilities and access to resources to help you identify, research and evaluate career/life options and plans. You will make decisions for what is right for you.

How much does career counseling cost?
Rockingham Community College does not charge for any of our career counseling services. The only cost will be the time you invest in planning for your future.

Who can use career counseling? Anyone! Enrolled students, prospective students, community
members, alumni are all welcome to utilize our services.

How long does career counseling take? The time needed is determined by the needs of each
individual. Some only need specific information that can be obtained in a brief meeting, others utilize career resources and counseling over an extended period of time. You determine what services you want to utilize and the amount of time you want to invest.
