ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

Accounting (A25100) Associate in Applied Science

The Accounting curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and the skills necessary for employment and growth in the accounting profession. Using the "language of business,’’ accountants assemble and analyze, process, and communicate essential information about financial operations. In addition to course work in accounting principles, theories, and practice, students will study business law, finance, management, and economics. Related skills are developed through the study of communications, computer applications, financial analysis, critical thinking skills, and ethics. Graduates should qualify for entry-level accounting positions in many types of organizations including accounting firms, small businesses, manufacturing firms, banks, hospitals, school systems, and governmental agencies. With work experience and additional education, an individual may advance in the accounting profession.

Associate Degree Nursing (A45120) Associate in Applied Science

The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide nursing care to clients and groups of clients throughout the life span in a variety of settings. Courses will include content related to the nurse’s role as provider of nursing care, as manager of care, as member of the discipline of nursing, and as a member of the interdisciplinary team. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) which is required for practice as a Registered Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics, physicians’ offices, industry, and community agencies.

Business Administration (A25120) Associate in Applied Science

The Business Administration curriculum is designed to introduce students to the various aspects of the free enterprise system. Students will be provided with a fundamental knowledge of business functions, processes, and an understanding of business organizations in today’s global economy. Course work includes business concepts such as accounting, business law, economics, management, and marketing. Skills related to the application of these concepts are developed through the study of computer applications, communication, team building, and decision making. Through these skills, students will have a sound business education base for lifelong learning. Graduates are prepared for employment opportunities in government agencies, financial institutions, and large to small business or industry.

Criminal Justice Technology (A55180) Associate in Applied Science

The Criminal Justice Technology curriculum is designed to provide knowledge of criminal justice systems and operations. Study will focus on local, state, and federal law enforcement, judicial processes, corrections, and security services. The criminal justice system’s role within society will be explored. Emphasis is on criminal justice systems, criminology, juvenile justice, criminal and constitutional law, investigative principles, ethics, and community relations. Additional study may include issues and concepts of government, counseling, communications, computers, and technology. Employment opportunities exist in a variety of local, state, and federal law enforcement, corrections, and security fields. Examples include police officer, deputy sheriff, county detention officer, state trooper, intensive probation/parole surveillance officer, correctional officer, and loss prevention specialist.

Early Childhood Associate (A55220) Associate in Applied Science

The Early Childhood Associate curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers. Course work includes child growth and development; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with parents and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children.

Graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs in early childhood settings. Employment opportunities include child development and child care programs, preschools, public and private schools, recreational centers, Head Start Programs, and school-age programs.

Electronics Technology (A50140) Associate in Applied Science

The Electronics Technology curriculum prepares individuals to build, install, test, troubleshoot, and repair electronic components, equipment, and systems. Students advance from fundamental electrical and electronic courses to concentrated studies of electrical machinery, industrial controls, microcomputer systems, and telecommunications.

Course work includes direct and alternating current electricity, digital and analog electronic circuits, microprocessors, digital and analog electronic communication systems, and industrial motors and controls. The program includes mathematics, applied physics, written and oral communications, computer skills, and critical thinking. Graduates should qualify for entry-level employment in manufacturing, maintenance, or sales. Applicable job titles include electronic technician, bench technician, field service technician, field service representative, control technician, and instrumentation technician.

Emergency Medical Science (A45340)

The Emergency Medical Science curriculum is designed to prepare graduates to enter the workforce as paramedics. Additionally, the program can provide an Associate Degree for individuals desiring an opportunity for career enhancement. The course of study provides the student an opportunity to acquire basic and advanced life support knowledge and skills by utilizing classroom instruction, practical laboratory sessions, hospital clinical experience, and field internships with emergency medical service agencies. Students progressing through the program may be eligible to apply for both state and national certification exams. Employment opportunities include ambulance services, fire and rescue agencies, air medical services, specialty areas of hospitals, industry, educational institutions, and government agencies.

EMS Bridging Program -- Cooperative Agreement with GTCC

The Emergency Medical Science Bridging program is designed to allow a currently certified non-degreed EMT paramedic to earn a two-year associate of applied science degree in Emergency Medical Science by completing the EMS Bridging Course (EMS 280), Rescue Scene Management (EMS 140), and EMS Management (EMS 235) in addition to all other general education requirements for this degree.

All general education requirements can be earned at Rockingham Community College. EMS 280, EMS 140 and EMS 235 will be offered provided that a sufficient number of students commit to take the courses at RCC at least one semester in advance of the requirement, otherwise the EMS courses may be taken at Guilford Technical Community College.

Fine and Creative Woodworking (A30160)
Associate in Applied Science

The Fine and Creative Woodworking curriculum prepares individuals to design and build high quality furniture and accessories. Students may choose to work in either period styles, creative work, or both. This program provides an opportunity to expand skill level and creativity in building fine furniture. The students will begin by developing a strong foundation in basic hand tool use and machining. Course work progresses to include study in finishing, turning, carving, jigs and fixtures, veneering, bending, equipment maintenance, principles of operating a business, and more.

Graduates may earn an AAS degree. This program concentrates on preparing graduates to establish a business of their own. In addition, graduates may find employment opportunities in high-end custom furniture shops or the furniture manufacturing industry.

Fire Protection Technology (A55240) Associate in Applied Science

The Fire Protection Technology curriculum is designed to provide individuals with technical and professional knowledge to make decisions regarding fire protection for both public and private sectors. It also provides a sound foundation for continuous higher learning in fire protection, administration, and management. Course work includes classroom and laboratory exercises to introduce the student to various aspects of fire protection. Students will learn technical and administrative skills such as hydraulics, hazardous materials, arson investigation, fire protection safety, fire suppression management, law, and codes.

Graduates should qualify for employment or advancement in governmental agencies, industrial firms, insurance rating organizations, educational organizations, and municipal fire departments. Employed persons should have opportunities for skilled and supervisory-level positions within their current organizations. The Fire Protection Technology Program at Rockingham Community College is a cooperative educational program offered by Guilford Technical Community College and Rockingham Community College. All required courses for the program are available in the Rockingham Community College service area under the auspices of Guilford Technical Community College. The degree is awarded jointly by Guilford Technical Community College and Rockingham Community College.

General Occupational Technology (A55280) Associate in Applied Science

The General Occupational Technology curriculum provides individuals with an opportunity to upgrade their skills and to earn an associate degree by taking courses suited for their occupational interests and/or needs. The curriculum content will be individualized for students according to their occupational interests and needs. A program of study for each student will be selected from associate degree-level courses offered by the College. Graduates will become more effective workers, better qualified for advancements within their field of employment, and become qualified for a wide range of entry-level employment opportunities.

Horticulture Technology (A15240) Associate in Applied Science

The Horticulture Technology Associate in Applied Science degree and Horticulture Technology Diploma may still be obtained if all the certificate major courses are offered. See your academic advisor for details.

Note: Certificates will be offered based on demand.

The Horticulture Technology curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for various careers in horticulture. Classroom instruction and practical laboratory applications of horticultural principles and practices are included in the program of study. Course work includes plant science, plant materials, propagation, soils, fertilizers, and pest management. Also included are courses in plant production, landscaping, and the management and operation of horticulture businesses. Graduates should qualify for employment opportunities in nurseries, garden centers, greenhouses, landscape operations, gardens, and governmental agencies. Graduates should also be prepared to take North Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s Examination and the North Carolina Certified Plant Professional Examination.

Human Resources Management (A2512C) Associate in Applied Science

Human Resources Management is a concentration under the curriculum title of Business Administration. The curriculum is designed to meet the demands of business and service agencies. The objective is the development of generalists and specialists in the administration, training, and management of human resources. Course work includes studies in management, interviewing, placement, needs assessment, planning, compensation and benefits, and training techniques. Also included are topics such as people skills, learning approaches, skills building, and development of instructional and training materials.

Graduates from this program will have a sound business educational base for life-long learning. Students will be prepared for employment opportunities in personnel, training, and other human resources development areas.

Information Systems Technology (A25260) Associate in Applied Science

The Information Systems curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for employment with organizations that use computers to process, manage, and communicate information. This is a flexible program, designed to meet community information systems needs. Course work includes computer systems terminology and operations, logic, operating systems, database, data communications/networking, and related business topics. Studies will provide experience for students to implement, Support, and customize industry-standard information systems.

Graduates should qualify for a wide variety of computer-related, entry-level positions that provide opportunities for advancement with increasing experience and ongoing training. Duties may include systems maintenance and troubleshooting, support and training, and business applications design and implementation.

Medical Office Administration (A25310) Associate in Applied Science

This curriculum prepares individuals for employment in medical and other health-care related offices. Course work will include medical terminology; information systems; office management; medical coding, billing and insurance; legal and ethical issues; and formatting and word processing. Students will learn administrative and support functions and develop skills applicable in medical environments.

Employment opportunities are available in medical and dental offices, hospitals, insurance companies, laboratories, medical supply companies, and other health-care related organizations.

Occupational Therapy Assistant (A45500) Associate in Applied Science

The Occupational Therapy Assistant curriculum prepares individuals to work under the supervision of a registered/licensed occupational therapist in screening, assessing, planning, and implementing treatment and documenting progress for clients receiving occupational therapy services. Course work includes human growth and development, conditions that interfere with activities of daily living, theory and process of occupational therapy, individual/ group treatment activities, therapeutic use of self, activity analysis, and grading/adapting activities and environments.

Graduates may be eligible to take the national certification examination for practice as a certified occupational therapy assistant. Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, long-term/extended care facilities, sheltered workshops, schools, home health programs, and community programs.

Rockingham Community College and Alamance Community College, Davidson County Community College, Forsyth Technical Community College, Guilford Technical Community College, and Surry Community College recognize the need to jointly pursue creative ways of responding to service area demands. Regional instructional efforts provide an alternative to the duplication of programs offered at the colleges. The degree is awarded by Rockingham Community College. Resources, such as clinical facilities and faculty, as well as approval standards, limit the number of applicants accepted into the program. Student selection will be based upon comparable criteria among the schools involved. Number of students per school is determined by clinical slots per service area. For the RCC student slots, priority will be given to Rockingham County residents.

The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 4720 Montgomery Lane, P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220. AOTA’s phone number is (301) 652-AOTA. Graduates of the program will be able to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). Most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination.

Office Systems Technology (A25360) Associate in Applied Science

The Office Systems Technology curriculum prepares individuals for positions in administrative support careers. It equips office professionals to respond to the demands of a dynamic computerized workplace. Students will complete courses designed to develop proficiency in the use of integrated software, oral and written communication, analysis and coordination of office duties and systems, and other support topics. Emphasis is placed on non-technical as well as technical skills.

Graduates should qualify for employment in a variety of positions in business, government, and industry. Job classifications range from entry-level to supervisor to middle management.

Physical Therapy Assistant (1+1) (A45640) Associate in Applied Science

The Physical Therapist Assistant curriculum prepares graduates to work in direct patient care settings under the supervision of physical therapists. Assistants work to improve or restore function by alleviation or prevention of physical impairment and perform other essential activities in a physical therapy department. Course work includes normal human anatomy and physiology, the consequences of disease or injury, and physical therapy treatment of a variety of patient conditions affecting humans throughout the life span.

Graduates may be eligible to take the licensure examination administered by the NC Board of Physical Therapy Examiners. Employment is available in general hospitals, rehabilitation centers, extended care facilities, specialty hospitals, home health agencies, private clinics, and public school systems.

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program at Rockingham Community College is a Piedmont regional educational program offered in cooperation with Alamance Community College, Davidson County Community College, Forsyth Technical Community College, Randolph Community College, Guilford Technical Community College, and Surry Community College. The length of the program is six semesters. In the first two semesters, students complete the general education requirements. The final four semesters of PTA academic course work is taken at the Guilford Technical Community College Jamestown campus. The degree is awarded by Guilford Technical Community College. Resources, such as clinical facilities and faculty, as well as approval standards, limit the number of applicants accepted into the program. Acceptance into the PTA program is competitive; a total of 12 individuals are admitted to the program each year with a limited number of slots assigned to the seven participating colleges. All applicants must meet minimum requirements and specific deadlines. Please note, however, that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Alternates not admitted to the program and applicants denied admission must reapply to be considered for the next year’s class.

The Physical Therapist Assistant program at Guilford Technical Community College has received full accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Respiratory Therapy (A45720) Associate in Applied Science

The Respiratory Therapy curriculum prepares individuals to function as respiratory therapists. In these roles, individuals perform diagnostic testing, treatments, and management of patients with heart and lung diseases. Students will master skills in patient assessment and treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases. These skills include life support, monitoring, drug administration, and treatment of patients of all ages in a variety of settings.

Graduates of accredited programs may be eligible to take entry-level examinations from the National Board for Respiratory Care. Therapy graduates may also take the Advanced Practitioner examination. Graduates may be employed in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, education, industry, and home care. The Respiratory Therapy Program at Rockingham Community College is regional in nature utilizing cooperative agreements with Alamance Community College and Guilford Technical Community College to enhance educational opportunities in the wider geographic area. Students receive clinical experience in a variety of hospitals and healthcare organizations throughout the entire Piedmont Triad Area of North Carolina.

Teacher Associate (A5522B) Associate in Applied Science

Teacher Associate is a concentration under the curriculum title of Early Childhood Associate. This curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers. Course work includes childhood growth and development, physical/nutritional needs of children, care and guidance of children, and communication skills with parents and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children.

Graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs in early childhood settings. Employment opportunities include child development and child care programs, preschools, public and private schools, recreational centers, Head Start Programs, and school-age programs.

Transfer to a University

The College Transfer Program is offered as part of the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) which governs the transfer of credit between community colleges and most 4-year colleges and universities in North Carolina. The courses in the College Transfer Program include a 44-hour semester General Education Core and 20-21 additional semester hours. North Carolina community college students who earn an associate’s degree according to the guidelines of the CAA will be treated as juniors at any of the UNC institutions providing that they are admitted to the institution. The CAA does not guarantee admission to any UNC institution or to any degree program within an institution. Admission to any university or college is competitive.

RCC advisors cannot be responsible for university degree requirements based on the transfer student’s university catalog since the catalog will not be published until after the student graduates from RCC.

General Education Core

A transfer student who completes the General Education Core at Rockingham Community College will not be required to take other general education classes at a UNC institution or other private colleges even if his/her 44-semester credit hour core does not completely match the university/college. However, students should be aware that some universities and colleges have graduation requirements that transfer students must satisfy – such as physical education or a foreign language.

DIPLOMA PROGRAMS

Air Conditioning, Heating, & Refrigeration Technology (D35100)

The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology curriculum provides the basic knowledge to develop skills necessary to work with residential and light commercial systems. Topics include mechanical refrigeration, heating and cooling theory, electricity, controls, and safety. The diploma program covers air conditioning, furnaces, heat pumps, tools and instruments. Diploma graduates should be able to assist in the start up, preventive maintenance, service, repair, and/or installation of residential and light commercial systems.

Central Sterile Processing (D45180) Diploma

The Central Sterile Processing curriculum prepares individuals to function in the central service profession with the scientific principles that underlie their daily work. Students will develop skills necessary to properly disinfect, prepare, process, store, and issue both sterile/non-sterile medical/surgical supplies and equipment for patient care. In addition, students will learn to operate sterilizing units and monitor effectiveness of the sterilization process.

Graduates will be eligible to apply to take the National Institute for the Certification of Healthcare Sterile Processing and Distribution Personnel Examination. Employment opportunities include inpatient/outpatient surgery centers, dialysis units/facilities, and central processing units in hospitals.

Cosmetology (D55140) Diploma

The Cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment, which enables students to develop manipulative skills. Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics. Graduates should qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Employment is available in beauty salons and related businesses.

In addition to tuition and books, cosmetology students are required to purchase a student equipment kit costing $153, two white uniforms at an estimated cost of $35 each, a mannequin costing $30, and malpractice insurance at $30 per year.

Early Childhood Associate (D55220) Diploma

The Early Childhood Associate curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers. Course work includes child growth and development; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with parents and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children.

Graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs in early childhood settings. Employment opportunities include child development and childcare programs, preschools, public and private schools, recreational centers, Head Start Programs, and school-age programs.

Electrical/Electronics Technology (D35220) Diploma

The Electrical/Electronics Technology curriculum is designed to provide training for persons interested in the installation and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems found in residential, commercial, and industrial facilities. Training, most of which is hands-on, will include such topics as AC/DC theory, basic wiring practices, digital electronics, programmable logic controllers, industrial motor controls, the National Electric Code, and other subjects as local needs require.

Graduates should qualify for a variety of jobs in the electrical/electronics field as an on-the-job trainee or apprentice assisting in the layout, installation, and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems.

The Industrial Maintenance Technology curriculum is designed to prepare or upgrade individuals to service, maintain, repair or install equipment for a wide range of industries. Instruction includes theory and skill training needed for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing industrial equipment and physical facilities. Students will learn technical skills in blueprint reading, electricity, hydraulics/pneumatics, machining, welding, and various maintenance procedures. Practical application in these industrial systems will be emphasized, and additional advanced course work may be offered.

Upon completion of various levels of this curriculum, graduates should gain the necessary practical skills and related technical information to qualify for employment or advancement in the various areas of industrial maintenance technology.

Machining Technology (D50300) Diploma

The Machining Technology curriculum is designed to develop skills in the theory and safe use of hand tools, power machinery, computerized equipment, and sophisticated precision inspection instruments. Students will learn to interpret blueprints, set up manual and CNC machines, perform basic and advanced machining operations, and make decisions to insure that work quality is maintained.

Employment opportunities for machining technicians exist in manufacturing industries, public institutions, governmental agencies, and in a wide range of specialty machining job shops.

Practical Nursing (D45660) Diploma

The Practical Nursing curriculum prepares individuals with the knowledge and skills to provide nursing care to children and adults. Students will participate in assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, rehabilitation/long term care/home health facilities, clinics, and physicians’ offices.

Surgical Technology (D45740) Diploma

The Surgical Technology curriculum prepares individuals to assist in the care of the surgical patient in the operating room and to function as a member of the surgical team. Students will apply theoretical knowledge to the care of patients undergoing surgery and develop skills necessary to prepare supplies, equipment, and instruments; maintain aseptic conditions; prepare patients for surgery; and assist surgeons during operations. Graduates of this program will be eligible to apply to take the Liaison Council’s Certification Examination for Surgical Technologists. Employment opportunities include labor/delivery/emergency departments, inpatient/outpatient surgery centers, dialysis units/facilities, physicians’ offices, and central supply processing units.

The Surgical Technology program was awarded accreditation by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in 1998.

Teacher Associate (D5522B) Diploma

Teacher Associate is a concentration under the curriculum title of Early Childhood Associate. This curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Heating Technology (C35100H)

The Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology curriculum provides the basic knowledge to develop skills necessary to work with residential and light commercial systems. Diploma graduates should be able to assist in the start up, preventive maintenance, service, repair, and/or installation of residential and light commercial systems.

Basic Law Enforcement Training (C55120) Certificate

This course covers the basic skills and knowledge needed for entry-level employment as a law enforcement officer in North Carolina. Topics are divided into general units of study: legal, patrol duties, law enforcement communications, investigation, practical application and sheriff specific. Upon successful completion, the student will be able to demonstrate competence in topics and areas required for the comprehensive certification examination. Students successfully completing a Basic Law Enforcement Training Course accredited by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission will receive credit for: CJC 120, CJC 131, CJC 132, CJC 221, CJC 225 and CJC 231 toward the Associate in Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice Technology (18 semester credit hours). Students must have successfully passed the Commission’s comprehensive certification examination. Students must have completed Basic Law Enforcement Training since 1985.

Cosmetology (C55140) Certificate

The Cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment, which enables students to develop manipulative skills. Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics. Graduates should qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Employment is available in beauty salons and related businesses.

In addition to tuition and books, cosmetology students are required to purchase a student equipment kit costing $153, two white uniforms at an estimated cost of $35 each, a mannequin costing $30, and malpractice insurance at $30 per year.

Early Childhood Associate (C55220E) Certificate

The Early Childhood Associate curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers. Course work includes child growth and development; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with parents and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children.

Graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs in early childhood settings. Employment opportunities include child development and childcare programs, preschools, public and private schools, recreational centers, Head Start Programs, and school-age programs.

Electrical/Electronics Technology

Industrial Automation Certificate (C35220A)

This program provides individuals with a basic knowledge of electricity, motors and controls, and PLC applications.

Residential, Commercial and Industrial Wiring Certificate (C35220R)

This program provides individuals with a basic knowledge of wiring in the industrial setting.

Electronics Technology

CISCO Routing and Networking Certificate (C50140C)

RCC is an official Cisco Systems Local Networking Academy. This five-course college credit certificate is designed for a beginning student. It will cover computer networking basics and four semesters of Cisco's official curriculum to help prepare students to pass the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate) certification exam. This program is an excellent choice for a fast-track to a high tech, high-paying job.

Fine and Creative Woodworking (C30160) Certificate

The Fine and Creative Woodworking curriculum prepares individuals to design and build high quality furniture and accessories. Students may choose to work either in period styles, creative work, or both. This program provides an opportunity to expand skill level and creativity in building fine furniture. The students will begin by developing a strong foundation in basic hand tool use and machining. Course work progresses to include study in finishing, turning, carving, jigs and fixtures, veneering, bending, equipment maintenance, principles of operating a business, and more.

Horticulture Technology Certificate

The Horticulture Technology Associate in Applied Science degree and Horticulture Technology Diploma may still be obtained if all the certificate major courses are offered. See your academic advisor for details.

The Horticulture Technology curriculum is designed to prepare individuals for various careers in horticulture. Classroom instruction and practical laboratory applications of horticultural principles and practices are included in the program of study. Course work includes plant science, plant materials, propagation, soils, fertilizers, and pest management. Also included are courses in plant production, landscaping, and the management and operation of horticulture businesses. Graduates should qualify for employment opportunities in nurseries, garden centers, greenhouses, landscape operations, gardens, and governmental agencies. Graduates should also be prepared to take North Carolina Pesticide Applicator’s Examination and the North Carolina Certified Plant Professional Examination.

Human Resources Management (C2512C) Certificate

Human Resources Management is a concentration under the curriculum title of Business Administration. The curriculum is designed to meet the demands of business and service agencies. The objective is the development of generalists and specialists in the administration, training, and management of human resources. Course work includes studies in management, interviewing, placement, needs assessment, planning, compensation and benefits, and training techniques. Also included are topics such as people skills, learning approaches, skills building, and development of instructional and training materials.

Graduates from this program will have a sound business educational base for life-long learning. Students will be prepared for employment opportunities in personnel, training, and other human resources development areas.

Industrial Maintenance Technology (D50240) Certificate

The Industrial Maintenance Technology curriculum is designed to prepare or upgrade individuals to service, maintain, repair, or install equipment for a wide range of industries. Instruction includes theory and skill training needed for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing industrial equipment and physical facilities. Students will learn technical skills in blueprint reading, electricity, hydraulics/pneumatics, machining, welding, and various maintenance procedures. Practical application in these industrial systems will be emphasized and additional advanced course work may be offered.

Upon completion of any of the various levels of this curriculum, graduates should gain the necessary practical skills and related technical information to qualify for employment or advancement in the various areas of industrial maintenance technology.

Information Systems Technology

Computer Application Certificate (C25260C)

The Computer Application Certificate curriculum provides individuals with a basic knowledge of computer application software. Individuals will complete a keyboarding and introduction to computers course and then choose four additional courses to complete their certificate.

Network Application Certificate (C25260N)

The Network Application Certificate curriculum provides individuals with a basic knowledge of computer networking and installation. Six courses are needed to complete the certificate.

Manufacturing Engineering Technology (A40300) Certificate

The Manufacturing Engineering Technology curriculum prepares individuals for employment in the fields of manufacturing technology. The curriculum emphasizes the theory and training required to effectively augment manufacturing engineers in industry. Courses include a background in mechanical and related theory and the use of manufacturing and analytical equipment. Industrial standards such as EPA, OSHA, GD&T, and ISO are discussed. Computer usage for process control and effective communication skills is emphasized.

Graduates of this curriculum qualify for positions as engineering technicians. Some of the responsibilities include drafting, process specification, tooling selection, automation programming, project facilitation, and supervision. Certification is available through organizations such as ASQC, SME, and NICET.

Office Systems Technology

Word Processing Certificate (C25360)

This curriculum prepares individuals for entry-level positions using computerized word processing software. Course work includes keyboarding, introduction to computers, text entry and formatting, and advanced word processing.

Phlebotomy (C45600) Certificate
(NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TITLE IV FINANCIAL AID FUNDS)

The Phlebotomy curriculum prepares individuals to obtain blood and other specimens for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Course work includes proper specimen collection and handling, communication skills, and maintaining patient data.

Graduates may qualify for employment in hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, and other health care settings and may be eligible for national certification as phlebotomy technicians.

The Phlebotomy program at RCC is NAACLS approved.

Licensed Practical Nurse Refresher (C45390)

The Licensed Practical Nurse Refresher curriculum provides a refresher course for individuals previously licensed as Practical Nurses and who are ineligible for reentry into nursing practice due to a lapse in licensure for five or more years. Individuals entering this curriculum must have been previously licensed as a Practical Nurse. Course work includes common medical-surgical conditions and nursing approaches to their management, including mental health principles, pharmacological concepts, and safe clinical nursing practice.

Graduates will be eligible to apply for reinstatement of licensure by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. Employment opportunities include hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics, physicians’ offices, industry, and community health agencies.

Teacher Associate (C5522B) Certificate

Teacher Associate is a concentration under the curriculum title of Early Childhood Associate. This curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments.
