If you are interested in beginning a new career or looking for a new job, improving your computer skills, becoming a better employee, or looking for a new hobby, Rockingham Community College offers a variety of short-term, continuing education courses designed to meet your needs:

Health

Cardiovascular Technician/Monitor: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, RCC. Learn to be an EKG (ECG) and Technician/Monitor. Topics include anatomy and physiology of the heart, EKG principles, dysrhythmia recognition of sinus, junctional/atrial rhythms, heart blocks and bundle branches and ventricular ectopy rhythms. Skills include operating EKG equipment, running and mounting strips, reading and interpreting 22 types of cardiac lead tracing produced from 12 and five lead monitors. Upon completion, students will be eligible to apply for the Certified EKG Technician (CET) exam with the National Health Career Association. Cost: $192. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2602.

AHA ACLS Instructor: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, RCC. This is the classroom component that must be completed to become an ACLS instructor. AHA BLS Instructor: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, RCC. This is the classroom component that must be completed to become a CPR instructor. First Aid: 2-5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, RCC. The American Heart Association HeartSaver First Aid is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until EMS arrives. Students also learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. When the course is completed, students receive an AHA First Aid recognition card that is valid for 2 years. There are no fee exemptions and First Aid card fees are included in the cost. Pre-payment and pre-registration is required no later than three business days prior to the class. AHA First Aid Cards are now eCards, you must have an email address to access your card. Cost: $35. CPR: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 or Saturday, Feb. 27, RCC. Learn to recognize an emergency or signs of heart attack, care for choking victims, rescue breathing and CPR. Introduces defibrillator. Course completion yields an American Heart Association/Basic Life Support recognition card valid for two years. Cost: $55, due a week prior to class. Info: 336-342-4261, ext. 2602.

eLearning CPR Skills Practice and Testing: Monday-Friday, Feb. 8-12, RCC. Are you seeking an alternative to classroom training or wishing to renew an existing AHA certification? The eLearning online course offers a flexible training option. The online cognitive portion, provided by AHA, allows students to complete learning at their own pace and convenience. Students should schedule a Skills Practice and Testing session prior to taking the online cognitive portion. Once students complete the online cognitive portion they should attend their scheduled hands-on skills practice and testing session to complete their certification. During this session students will have the opportunity for one-on-one practice before a skill test with a certified AHA instructor. Upon successful completion of these parts students will be proficient in the required skills and will receive a certification in the associated discipline. The student will need to bring the eLearning certificate to the appointment along with a valid email address for the certificate. AHA CPR Cards are now eCards; you must have an email address to access your card. Appointment times are Monday/Wednesday 9-5; Tuesday/Thursday 9-7 and Friday 9-12. Explore and Expand Careers

OBD/IM Emissions Training: 5-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 1-2, RCC, plus a hands-on portion at Jumper’s Auto Service, Eden. This course prepares auto technicians and service personnel to be safety and emissions inspectors for motor vehicles. It includes regulations and test inspection procedures. Learn to inspect a vehicle and gain skills to pass the qualification exams for certification as a safety and emissions inspector at a licensed inspection station. Cost: $75. Vehicle Safety Inspection: 5-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 8-9, RCC, plus a hands-on portion at Jumper’s Auto Service, Eden. Learn the proper procedures for conducting vehicle safety inspections and operating a safety inspection station. Cost: $78. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2333.

Computer Programming: Feb. 4-May 7, 6-8 p.m. Thursdays virtually and other work online. Learn aspects of developing a computer program. Analyze problems, create pseudocode and flow charts, and ultimately create a functioning program to solve those problems. Students learn to correct and execute programs, apply effective programming techniques to prepare business reports, and create and maintain data files. Students do not need a strong technical or math background to succeed in this course. The course is delivered online and meets virtually one night per week. Tuition prepayment required. Cost: $180. Effective Teacher Training: 9 a.m.-noon Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, Feb. 16-March 11, RCC. Potential substitute teachers learn how to be successful in a classroom setting. This course is required by Rockingham County Schools in order to gain employment as a substitute teacher. Cost: $125. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2333.

Notary Public: 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Feb. 20, RCC. Students learn the requirements and qualifications of the notary public office. Prepayment and purchase of Notary Book 11th Edition required. Cost: $70. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2333.

Customer Service: Feb. 25-April 8, online. This online course stresses the importance of delivering quality customer service. Emphasis is placed on customer service from the company’s point of view as well as the customers. Students will study skills in communication, telephone etiquette, netiquette, time management, and problem-solving. Students will also learn how to anticipate customer needs and effectively handle customer relations. Tuition prepayment required. Cost: $125. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2333.

Outdoors

Chainsaw Safety: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27, RCC. Classroom and field training is covered during this USFS-certified session by Helton Forestry Enterprises. Due to significant storm damage to area trails, the need for certified and recertified chainsaw operators is a critical issue. Participants learn basics of chainsaw job hazard analysis, use and maintenance, directional felling, as well as saw tasks and techniques. Participants perform chainsaw operations and be evaluated on their skill level under the guidance of one of the more experienced USFS qualified instructor/certifiers in NC. Certificates will be awarded to all participants. Participants must dress appropriately for trail work – gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, chaps, and leather boots required.
