Homemade Music Feb. 23
Feb 13, 2018When you do something once, it’s appreciated. When you do it twice, it’s expected. But what happens when you do it for twenty years?
Rockingham Community College will find out when it presents the 20th annual edition of Homemade Music, a concert to benefit the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Faculty, staff, students, and even some retirees will take the stage in the college auditorium on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 PM to play some acoustic music and raise money for a good cause. The public is invited to attend. Although admission is free, a generous donation to Habitat for Humanity is suggested.
RCC first organized this annual fundraiser in 1999 at the urging of student musician Brad Talley who challenged the “old timers” on the staff and faculty to pick up their instruments and join the show. Since that first show, Homemade Music has raised more than $20,000 for the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity and entertained audiences totaling into the thousands. Although Brad and some of the other original performers have moved on to other ventures and venues, college personnel continue to take up the challenge of making music and raising funds for the benefit of the local community.
This year’s show will feature some returning acts as well as some new comers. Keith Sigmon (who hosted the show for four years before retiring last spring) brings his harmonica and two new musical friends together as “Solid Pipe,” a trio playing ragtime, blues, and jazz from the 1920s and 1930s.
“Ironworks” will again take the stage to perform a selection of popular tunes from the 1960s. Joyce Crutchfield (on mandolin and vocals), Lee Dodson (on guitar and vocals), Jesse Epperson (washtub bass), and Steven Smith (tenor banjo and guitar) make up “Ironworks.” Cumulatively its members have over 200 years of experience playing and performing. Expect to hear some exceptional and diverse music whenever these four musicians get together!
Flat-picking guitarist Ed Dodson will be back as well to play some favorite tunes from the bluegrass and swing traditions.
No matter what kind of music they prefer, audiences are likely to find some great entertainment and to lend support to a worthy cause on the RCC campus. Don’t miss the 20th annual edition of Homemade Music on Friday, Feb. 23 at 7 PM. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!
