Manufacturer’s Day at RCC

Oct 16, 2017

Over 100 students from Rockingham County high schools visited the campus of Rockingham Community College on October 5. Students met faculty, toured facilities, and engaged with area manufacturers during the Advanced Manufacturing Expo portion of the day.

Today, manufacturing facilities are not filled with antiquated equipment nor are they dark, dirty and unsafe. Modern manufacturing is driven by robotics, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, advanced computer-aided design and 3D printing. RCC works in partnership with area manufacturers and the public schools to provide career and technical educational courses so that students have an understanding of possible careers and of the training that is needed to become employed after high school graduation.

Representatives from Commonwealth Brands, Inc.; Gildan; Pine Hall Brick Co.; Frontier Spinning; Henniges Automotive; Bibey Machine; Weil-McLain,and Wieland Copper Products presented interactive demonstrations for the students and their college advisors, counselors, career development coordinators, and career and technical education instructors. Attendees were also introduced to the ROCKATOP Apprenticeship which is a partnership between educators and industry that promote apprenticeship opportunities in industrial and technical fields.

“During the event, many of the students talked with manufacturing representatives, exchanged contact information, discussed career paths, ”said Sally Newman, RCC’s Director of Customized Training. “We want students, teachers and the community to know manufacturing facilities today are innovative and tech-savvy and RCC can provide the training that is needed for a successful career.”

Not only do RCC students have the opportunity to explore a variety of career options and earn a degree that leads to a career, but they are well prepared to continue their education at a 4-year university.

At RCC, Start Local. Go Far.
