If you are interested in beginning a new career or looking for a new job, improving your computer skills, becoming a better employee, or looking for a new hobby, Rockingham Community College offers a variety of short-term, continuing education courses designed to meet your needs. Health

Emergency Medical Technician Initial: 6-10 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 2-July 1 (plus 8 a.m.-5 p.m. every other Saturday starting March 13), RCC. Learn basic life support skills. EMTs are able to function in many areas including EMS systems, fire departments, hospitals, rescue squads and physician offices. The class consists of lectures and hands-on skills instruction as well as field clinical opportunities. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to sit for the North Carolina or National Registry EMT examination. Textbook and workbooks required. Nurse Aide hybrid: 8 a.m.-noon. Mondays-Thursdays, March 1-May 27, RCC, plus additional work online. The program prepares graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis on aging process. A skill/competency evaluation is required. CPR: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, March 12 or Saturday, March 27, RCC. Learn to recognize an emergency or signs of heart attack, care for choking victims, rescue breathing and CPR. Introduces defibrillator. Course completion yields an American Heart Association/Basic Life Support recognition card valid for two years. Cost: $55, due a week prior to class. Info: 336-342-4261, ext. 2602.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Saturday, March 12-13, RCC. ACLS is an advanced, instructor-led classroom course that highlights the importance of team dynamics and communication, systems of care and immediate post-cardiac arrest care. It also covers airway management and related pharmacology. In this course, skills are taught in large, group sessions and small, group learning and testing stations where case-based scenarios are presented. Pre-payment and pre-registration are required no later than three business days prior to the class. NC fee exempt status applies. Cost: $80. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2111.

eLearning CPR Skills Practice and Testing: March 8-12, RCC. Are you seeking an alternative to classroom training or wishing to renew an existing AHA certification? The eLearning online course offers a flexible training option. The online cognitive portion, provided by AHA, allows students to complete learning at their own pace and convenience. Students should schedule a Skills Practice and Testing session prior to taking the online cognitive portion. Once students complete the online cognitive portion they should attend their scheduled hands-on skills practice and testing session to complete their certification. During this session students will have the opportunity for one-on-one practice before a skill test with a certified AHA instructor. Upon successful completion of these parts students will be proficient in the required skills and will receive a certification in the associated discipline. The student will need to bring the eLearning certificate to the appointment along with a valid email address for the certificate. You must have an email address to access your AHA eCard. Appointment times are Monday/Wednesday 9-5; Tuesday/Thursday 9-7 and Friday 9-12. Appointments will be given in one-hour increments. Vehicle Safety Inspection: 5-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, March 8-9, RCC, plus a hands-on portion at Jumper’s Auto Service, Eden. Learn the proper procedures for conducting vehicle safety inspections and operating a safety inspection station. Cost: $78. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2333.

OBD/IM Emissions Training: 5-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, March 1-2, RCC, plus a hands-on portion at Jumper’s Auto Service, Eden. This course prepares auto technicians and service personnel to be safety and emissions inspectors for motor vehicles. It includes regulations and test inspection procedures. Learn to inspect a vehicle and gain skills to pass the qualification exams for certification as a safety and emissions inspector at a licensed inspection station. Cost: $75. Notary Public: 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. March 13 or 27, RCC. Students learn the requirements and qualifications of the notary public office. Prepayment and purchase of Notary Book 11th Edition required. Cost: $70. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2333.

Creative Arts

Fundamentals of Stained Glass: 6:15-9:15 p.m. Thursdays, March 11-April 29, RCC. Learn at the introductory level. Course includes discussion on the history and trends of the art, practice in the art of stained glass making, and information to build and supply appropriate studios. Leaded glass construction will also be discussed but will not be a focus. Upon completion, students will be prepared to either advance to a higher skill level or to fabricate and market their goods. Safety glasses are required. Students need to obtain the following materials: glass cutter, glass pliers, glass foil, solder, soldering iron, rheostat, work board (instructions on how to build will be given at the first class). This initial supplies’ investment will range from $200-$300, depending upon the quality of items purchased. Register early – only six students allowed per class. Cost: $90. Drawing and Keeping a Sketchbook: 1-4 p.m. Tuesdays, March 16-May 4, RCC. If you have always wanted to learn to draw, or you just want to learn more, this class is for you. The basics of drawing will begin the class and we progress as the class advances. Step by step, the instructor will demonstrate and help you keep a sketchbook of your progress. Student supply list: pencils, erasers, spiral- bound sketchbook, paper towels, and any kind of soft brush to clear away eraser bits. Cost: $70. Info: 336-342-4261 ext. 2333.

Painting Provence, France: 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays, March 17-May 5, RCC. Students will complete a landscape acrylic painting. The scene is the beautiful rolling fields of lavender in Provence. Color mixture and perspective prevail in this 16×20 painting. Student supply List: table cover, paper towels, paper plates, water container, basic acrylic colors, basic brushes, and a 16×20 canvas.
