WENTWORTH, N.C. – Following the November 2018 unanimous approval of the N.C. Auctioneer Licensing Board (NCALB) of Rockingham Community College’s application for an accredited Auctioneering School, the program is set to begin.

Classes will start on March 17, 2020, meeting on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. through July 18, and conclude with a live mock auction. There are plans to offer a shorter course period during the summer, to better suit out-of-state students; dates are TBA.

Training is completed in 102 hours and will prepare students to apply for licensure with the NCALB as a professional auctioneer. A high school diploma or GED is required.

Students from any county or state are encouraged to attend. The tuition cost of $180 per student for the Auctioneering School is the same, regardless of residency.

Students who earn their license in North Carolina can practice in several other states. According to the NCALB, states offering reciprocity are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Coursework includes bid calling and voice control, advertising, drafting and negotiating contracts, closing statements and settlements, auctioneering ethics, and proper handling of sale proceeds and escrow accounts. Students will learn to sell items such as antiques, real estate, art and jewelry, automobiles, farm machinery, and livestock.

“The environment at a live professional auction just cannot be duplicated online,” said John Evans, who spearheaded the effort to establish the Auctioneering School at RCC. “Hearing that chant creates excitement and competitiveness.”

Program instructors include:

• Joel Isley, a professional auctioneer with more than 30 years’ experience and a former Auctioneers Association of N.C. Bid Calling Champion, of Gibsonville, N.C.

• John Hall, a licensed Realtor, firm auctioneer, and co-owner of RE/MAX Blue Sky Realty in Reidsville, N.C.

• John Evans, a professional auctioneer licensed in North Carolina and Virginia with more than 15 years’ experience

• Kenneth Smithey, professional auctioneer and owner of Funwood Auction Sales and Trading Post Inc. in Reidsville, N.C.

• Tom Jordan, professional auctioneer, real estate broker and appraiser, and president of Carolina Auction & Realty in Raleigh, N.C.

• The Honorable Chris Freeman, local Rockingham County (N.C.) District Court Judge for District 17A

• RCC faculty Martha Fields (math), Kris Brooks (heavy equipment), and Kristi Merritt (computers)

Guest speakers, from the North Carolina Auctioneer Licensing Board, are Executive Director Charles Diel and board member Willie Johnson.

Earning potential for professional auctioneers can vary greatly and is often commission-based. Skills needed to be successful as a professional auctioneer include strong organizational and math skills, the ability to promote events, a strong speaking voice, ethical behavior, and the ability to engage and entertain an audience.

Rockingham Community College is the third community college-based Auctioneering School in the State of North Carolina.

“Our Piedmont Triad location makes it more convenient for students in Northern North Carolina and Southern Virginia to access this valuable and affordable training,” said RCC President Dr. Mark O. Kinlaw.

“We are pleased to accredit a new Auctioneering School at Rockingham Community College and wish them every success in furthering the esteemed and centuries old profession of Auctioneering,” said Diehl, when RCC’s program was accredited.
