RCC Breaks Ground for Simulated Hospital

Jun 5, 2014

Rockingham Community College broke ground today for a simulated hospital, the first of its kind in the Piedmont Triad.

RCC’s Owens Human Services Building will be renovated to house a simulated hospital. Within this state-of-the-art learning facility, health sciences students will receive the training to better prepare them for positions within the medical field.

“The extensive renovations will transform the facility into a simulated hospital where students will benefit from the interdisciplinary approach to education in the health sciences,” explained RCC’s president, Dr. Michael S. Helmick. “These students previously worked in isolation and in a variety of buildings across campus. Now they will come together to work and learn to work as a team in a real hospital setting.”

In September, the Reidsville Area Foundation donated $1.27 million for the project and enabled the college to save thousands of dollars by reducing the project from three phases to two. Additional private donations will be used to complete the $4.8 million dollar project. H. M. Kern Corporation of Greensboro has been selected as general contractor for the project. The Charlotte/Raleigh-based architectural firm of Clark Patterson Lee designed the facility.

“Learning in this environment will give students the opportunity to learn from mistakes without hurting a patient,” said Elizabeth Hasanaj, a first-year nursing student at RCC. “In addition, better learning outcomes will result since both students and faculty will be able to review videos made in the classroom.”

The college will continue to seek donations to cover the cost of equipment and furnishings for the facility. Opportunities to name sections, areas, and rooms are available. Individuals, groups, and businesses wanting to learn more these opportunities can contact Gaye Barbour Clifton in the RCC Development Office at (336) 342-4261, ext. 2201.
