The Emergency Medical Science programs at RCC are limited enrollment, meaning admission is not guaranteed. Minimum admission requirements must first be completed in order to be considered for the programs. Click on the sections below to learn more.

Emergency Medical Science AAS

The Emergency Medical Science curriculum provides individuals with the knowledge, skills and attributes to provide advanced emergency medical care as a paramedic for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system and prepares graduates to enter the workforce.

Minimum Requirements

Emergency Medical Science Minimum Requirements

  • Complete the RCC admissions process ( apply to RCC, submit all transcripts).
  • Eligible to take ENG 111 with or without a co-requisite.
  • Eligible to take MAT 143 with or without a co-requisite.
  • Be in Satisfactory Academic Standing with Rockingham Community College (2.0 or higher cumulative GPA). 
  • EMT-Initial certification (Spring admissions only, not required for fall admissions)

NOTE: All EMS applicants are initially in the Prehealth Emergency Medical Science (A10300EM) program. Students will be officially enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science (A45340A) program after successfully completing all application steps in the section below.

Application Steps

  1. Complete the RCC admissions processAll transcripts (high school or GED and any colleges attended) must be on file with the Admissions Office. Students must meet with an admissions counselor to review placement and attend orientation before proceeding with the next steps. 
  2. Complete placement test. The test is available by appointment through the RCC Testing Center. Please contact them at (336) 342-4261 x2225 or testing@rockinghamcc.edu to schedule the English and math test. Students may be waived from the test with credit for ENG 111 and a college-level math course.
  3. Submit the Candidate Review Form  and upload all required documentation. You will receive an email confirmation once your application has been processed and submitted to the EMS department.
  4. Schedule an appointment to meet with Jason Collins, EMS Program Director. Jason Collins can be reached at collinsj1503@rockinghamcc.edu or (336) 342-4261 x2111.

Clinical Compliance Policy

The Emergency Medical Science Program provides learning opportunities for students in an array of clinical learning environments. To comply with program policies, state and local regulations for healthcare providers, and in the interest of your own personal safety, the safety of your patients, and the potential liability to both the college and clinical agency, there are significant compliance requirements that must be met in order to enter the clinical area.  

Applicants are expected to review the  Compliance Policy for Clinical Placement  prior to application to the program.


Emergency Medical Science Bridge AAS

The Emergency Medical Science (EMS) Bridge Program is designed to allow currently certified non-degree paramedics to earn an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Emergency Medical Science. The EMS Bridge AAS degree requires 70 semester credit hours (SHC).

Through the bridging program, current credentialed EMT-Paramedic will be awarded 45 semester credits toward the AAS degree upon completion of EMS 235 and EMS 280. Credit is awarded for the following courses: EMS 110, EMS 122, EMS 130, EMS 131, EMS 160, EMS 220, EMS 221, EMS 231, EMS 240, EMS 241, EMS 250, EMS 260, EMS 270, and EMS 285.

Emergency Medical Science Bridge Minimum Requirements

  • Complete the RCC admissions process ( apply to RCC, submit all transcripts).
  • Required documentation:
    • Copy of paramedic education program transcript
    • Documented evidence of 500 hours of patient contact at the paramedic level. Letter must be signed by the director of the EMS agency with which the candidate is affiliated
    • Two letters of recommendation from an EMS agency on agency letterhead
    • North Carolina driver’s license
    • Current certifications:
      • NC EMT-Paramedic or National Registry Paramedic
      • Healthcare Provider CPR certification or equivalent
      • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or equivalent
      • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or equivalent
      • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Life Support (ITLS) certification or equivalent
  • Be in Satisfactory Academic Standing with Rockingham Community College (2.0 or higher cumulative GPA).
