The Practical Nursing diploma program at RCC is limited enrollment, meaning admission is not guaranteed. The program includes three semesters of nursing coursework (fall, spring, and summer). Graduates are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) which is required for practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Admissions Requirements

Practical Nursing (PN) Minimum Requirements

  • Complete the RCC admissions process ( apply to RCC, submit all transcripts)
  • Completed  BIO 168  and BIO 169  with a grade of “C” or higher. (Applicants may be enrolled in BIO 169 in the Spring 2024 semester.)
  • Completed  CHM 131  (with lab CHM 131A ) or  CHM 151  with a grade of “C” or higher. (Applicants may be enrolled in CHM 131 /A or CHM 151 in the Spring 2024 semester.)
  • Have a 2.5 GPA or higher from all completed pre-requisite and nursing general education courses (grades must be “C” or higher). GPA calculation includes:
  • Be in Satisfactory Academic Standing with Rockingham Community College (2.0 or higher RCC cumulative GPA). 
  • Attend a mandatory Nursing Information Session in the 2023/2024 academic year.
  • Hold current certification in  Adult and Child CPR  issued by the American Heart Association.
  • Current Nurse Aide I (CNA) in North Carolina. Must be listed on the state registry. (Applicants may be currently enrolled in a Nurse Aide I class in Spring 2024.)
  • Complete the TEAS exam with a minimum score of 58%. Scores are valid for 24 months (2 years) from time of application.
  • Essay– One page, double spaced, typed statement responding to the following questions: What makes you a strong candidate for the PN program at Rockingham Community College? What is the biggest challenge you will face in the PN program?

It is your responsibility to read this page and the information it contains in its entirety. You must meet all requirements to be considered for acceptance; however, completion of these items does not guarantee acceptance to the Fall 2024 entering class.

Application Steps

  • Read the Admissions Requirements (above) and complete the Minimum Admissions Requirements. This includes applying to RCC and submitting all official transcripts to the Admissions Office. NOTE: Current RCC students do not need to submit a new RCC application.
  • Attend a mandatory 2023-2024 Nursing Information Session (see dates in section below).
  • Complete the  Practical Nursing Candidate Review Form online. The Candidate Review Form will open Friday, December 15, 2023. Candidate Review Forms, including all application materials (TEAS scores, CPR card, etc.), must be submitted by Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 5:00pm.
  • Monitor your email for your Candidate Review Form status. Candidate Review Forms will be processed as soon as possible upon submission. You will be notified via email whether your form has been successfully submitted to the Nursing Department or if a follow-up meeting with RCC Admissions is required prior to processing your form:
    • Submitted Candidate Review Forms that are complete and meet all minimum requirements will be processed and forwarded to the Nursing Department for review. No further action from the student is required in this case.
    • Candidates missing requirements or that need additional verification will be required to schedule a follow-up appointment. Candidates will receive the link to schedule an appointment by email. This appointment must be completed by Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 5:00pm. This appointment is required before the application will be processed and forwarded to the Nursing Department for review.

Information Sessions

Nursing Information Session Details

Information sessions are offered virtually through Zoom and on campus in the Owens Health Sciences (OHS) building. Fall 2024 applicants are required to attend one session. If you attended last year’s information session, you must still attend one of these sessions.

Sessions begin at time listed and will last approximately one hour. Please log into the Zoom session or arrive to the campus location at least 10 minutes before the start time. Late arrivals will not receive credit for attendance and must attend another session to receive credit.

Registration is required. Zoom links are provided in the registration confirmation email (registration links below).

TEAS Information

TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills)

The ATI TEAS is designed to assess a student’s preparedness for entering the health science fields. The TEAS can be taken in the RCC Testing Center, online through an ATI remote proctor, or at a PSI testing center. 

General TEAS Information

  • The TEAS consists of 170 multiple choice questions completed over 209 minutes (approximately 3.5 hours).
  • The exam is divided into four sections: Reading (45 questions/55 minutes), Mathematics (38 questions/57 minutes), Science (50 questions/60 minutes), and English and Language Usage (37 questions/37 minutes).
  • All TEAS registration is handled through ATI Testing. Please do not contact RCC to schedule or reschedule your test. Any issues regarding the scheduling of your TEAS test is handled through ATI Testing.
  • ATI TEAS study materials and online practice tests are offered through the ATI website
  • Government-issued photo ID required the day of the exam. Name on ID must match the name on your ATI account. 
  • RCC does not require an official TEAS transcript from ATI Testing. Download a score report after your exam at no cost to submit with your nursing application.

RCC offers the TEAS in-person through the RCC Testing Center.

  • The exam will be taken on a Testing Center computer through your ATI account. You must bring your ATI username and password the day of the exam.
  • A government-issued photo ID is required the day of the test. The name on your ID must match the name on your ATI account.
  • Arrive 30 minutes early to allow time for check-in and logging into your ATI account.

Option 2: TEAS Online (Remote Proctoring)

ATI Testing offers an online TEAS exam. This format is proctored online by ATI through Proctorio. Before purchasing an online TEAS exam, be sure to review the system requirements and the TEAS Quick Start Guide.

  2. Select Online to take the exam virtually.
  3. Input a date range of when you want to test.
  4. Select a session date/time that works for you. Pay close attention to time zone!

Students are welcome to take the TEAS exam in person at a PSI Testing Center. Before purchasing this option, it is important to review the PSI testing locations and open test dates/times. Clinical Compliance Policy

The Practical Nursing Program provides learning opportunities for students in an array of clinical learning environments. To comply with program policies, state and local regulations for healthcare providers, and in the interest of your own personal safety, the safety of your patients, and the potential liability to both the college and clinical agency, there are significant compliance requirements that must be met in order to enter the clinical area.  

Applicants are expected to review the  Compliance Policy for Clinical Placement prior to application to the program.
