Placement Testing

Students enrolling at RCC enter with a variety of skills and educational backgrounds. In order to ensure appropriate placement in courses, applicants may be required to take placement tests. The need for testing is typically determined during the admission process by a counselor or admissions staff.

Placement test scores are used to determine course placement for students, as scores indicate if a student is college-ready (i.e. able to enroll in college courses immediately) or if developmental courses must be taken initially.

Developmental courses are pre-college courses in the areas of math, reading, writing, and computer technology, with course placement levels in math of 010 – 080 (DMA prefix), reading levels 080 – 090 (RED prefix), writing levels 075 – 090 (ENG prefix), and computer technology level 070 (CIS prefix). Successful completion of these courses should prepare students for their college level courses.

Developmental courses are not factored into a student’s GPA, nor do they fulfill graduation requirements. Because many of RCC’s college level courses have developmental courses as pre-requisites, it is very important that students take these courses seriously and make good grades in them.

Students can show they are college-ready by meeting RCC’s cut scores on one of these assessments:

Test NC DAP SAT (After 3/1/16) SAT (Before 3/1/16)* ACT*
English 151 480 500- Reading
500- Verbal
22- Reading
18- English
Math 7 or higher on all DMA tests
(010, 020, 030, 040, 050, and 060)
530 500 22

*In order for students to be waived from RCC’s NCDAP English placement test, students must show they are college-ready in both reading and writing on the SAT (before 3/1/16) or ACT test. This requires students to submit both a reading score and a verbal/English score that meet the above SAT or ACT cut scores.

Placement testing is by appointment only. Students must bring a current picture ID and their Test Authorization Form, which is issued by a counselor or admission staff member.
