With so many choices and options, college can sometimes be confusing and overwhelming. The Advising & Counseling Center provides a variety of services and is an excellent resource to help you navigate the many obstacles you might face. The Advising & Counseling Center offers assistance in the areas of academic advising, college transfer and career services, disability services, personal counseling, and testing.
If you have academic questions, you should first contact your instructor and/or advisor. You may contact a member of the Advising & Counseling Center staff to discuss various academic issues such as academic progress, probation, course load, time management, study skills or course sequencing.
Academic Advising
Faculty advisors help students make informed decisions about their program of study and potential career, which will enable students to create a viable plan to meet their academic and career goals. Topics usually covered in the advising process include:

- Student’s program of study
- Potential career resulting from the program
- Courses needed to complete the program

- Registration for each Semester
Other Academic Assistance
Students may come to the Advising & Counseling Center or the Admissions Office to receive help with academic issues. Students often seek help with interpreting RCC’s academic policies, including the following:

- Changing program of study
- Adding or dropping a course
- Accessing RCC’s campus resources

- Grade appeal process
- Student Code of Conduct issues
- Withdrawing from RCC
Personal Counseling
Sometimes life happens when you’re in college. If you find that you are dealing with personal issues that are affecting your life (academic work, relationships, outlook on life), we have staff who can talk with you and help you find appropriate resources to help you deal with these issues. The Advising & Counseling Center is a safe place to come for assistance and we want to support you when life becomes difficult to manage.
Ms. Heather Simons, Counselor, is available to assist you as someone with whom you can talk in a confidential manner. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor with wide experience in working with college students and a wide range of issues, such as relationship and family issues, substances abuse, and other matters that might suggest additional or prolonged assistance. She is a counselor at Daymark Recovery Services and is able to assist with referrals of students for additional counseling needs when these are identified.
