Chainsaw Safety
Chainsaw safety classroom and field training is covered during this two-day USFS-certified training session by Helton Forestry Enterprises. Due to significant storm damage to area trails, the need for certified and recertified chainsaw operators is a critical issue. Participants learn basics of chainsaw job hazard analysis, use and maintenance, directional felling, as well as saw tasks and techniques. Participants perform chainsaw operations and are evaluated on their skill level under the guidance of one of the more experienced USFS qualified instructor/certifiers in NC. Certificates will be awarded to all participants. Participants must dress appropriately for trailwork – gloves, hard hat, safety goggles, chaps, and leather boots required. Chainsaws will be provided.

Sustainable Trail Design and Layout, Construction, and Maintenance
During this four-day basic trail training session, participants learn how to design, lay out, construct, and maintain sustainable trails. Classroom teaching and experiential learning are combined to understand the fundamentals of sustainable trails. Participants discuss the “trail experience” and characteristics of sustainable trails. They learn about the five essential elements of sustainable trails and how to incorporate them into trail layout and construction. The session covers design, construction, and maintenance techniques that minimize the volume and velocity of water on the trail tread. Receive guidance from desktop trail planning to design and layout, corridor flagging, and pin flagging of a trail alignment in the field. Gain field experience constructing new trail reroutes and maintaining existing trails on the RCC campus. Become familiar with the use of a clinometer to measure trail grade/steepness and side slopes. Common trailwork hand tools will be utilized for trail construction and maintenance. Participants should bring their own lunch, snacks, and plenty of drinking water. Participants must dress appropriately for trailwork – gloves, safety glasses, long pants, and closed-toe shoes (boots preferred). Trailbuilding tools will be provided.

Sustainable Trail Management, Assessment, Permitting, and Contracting
During this two-day intermediate trail training session, participants learn about the comprehensive management of natural surface trails. Participants discuss trail assessment, trail facilities, signage, maintenances, wet weather trail closure, and other current issues. Classroom teaching and experiential learning are combined to understand critical trail assessment. Participants discuss how trail condition, maintenance, and safety can affect the “trail experience,” and they conduct a desktop trail system review. Participants learn how the interpretation of assessment results may vary depending on user group and trail difficulty. The session covers potential permitting requirements and trail contracting for natural surface sustainable trail projects based on assessment results. Gain field experience assessing existing trails and proposed reroutes on the RCC trail system. Fieldwork also includes a site visit to a local trail system to evaluate sustainable trail management topics. Participants should bring their own lunch, snacks, and plenty of drinking water. Participants must dress appropriately for hiking – long pants and closed-toe shoes (boots preferred), and be prepared to hike 3-6 miles over the course of two days.

Trail Construction with Mechanized Equipment
During this advanced three-day training session, participants gain an introduction into the world of mechanized trail building and train on a variety of mini-excavators and a Sutter trail dozer. For more information, call 336-342-4261 x2010.

TRAILS Information
Registration
Certificates and CEUs will be awarded to all participants. You can register online under the RCC Continuing Education/Online Registration tabs on our website (enter the course code number or a keyword). Once the course title comes up, be sure to click the box beside it in the “Select” column then click “Submit.” Once online registration is completed, a registration confirmation should come up on the screen.
The online registration system can be challenging for first-time registrants. We recommend calling RCC Continuing Education at 336-342-4261 ext. 2333 to register directly, or if you experience any registration problems. Our website and this list of classes constantly evolves so make sure and check back often.
Accommodations
A couple of local hotels, Hampton Inn, Eden and Holiday Inn and Suites, Reidsville, are offering a special rate ($84 + tax) for TRAILS program students. You will need to call the hotel directly and tell them you are with the Rockingham Community College TRAILS program. Please let me know if you have any trouble getting this rate. Cabins and tent camping are available at Camp GuilRock. For additional information, please contact the Camp Director ( campguilrock@gmail.com ) at 336-342-1951. Camping is also available at Lake Reidsville. Reservations can be made by calling 336-349-4738.
