Cabinetmaking
This course is designed to teach the fundamental techniques of cabinetmaking. Course topics can include but are not limited to understanding the difference between production and custom cabinets, learning the proper selection of woods, materials, tools and finishes, learning how to plan, blueprint and build a small cabinet, understanding cabinet installation and how to estimate building and labor construction costs.
Students will need: Safety glasses, hearing protection, N95 mask to protect against sawdust when cutting, measuring tape, pencil, folding rule (instructor will specify what type of folding rule during the first class – do not purchase this ahead of time).
Absolutely no smoking on the premises, whether indoors or outdoors – zero tolerance policy due to flammability. Students must wear closed toe shoes. Pants must fit snugly at the waist and properly throughout, because loose-fitting pants or shirts can catch in the machinery and cause serious injury. While operating machinery, never wear long sleeves that fit loosely or do not button at the wrist. Long hair must be tied back into a bun at all times to prevent getting caught in machinery. The instructional space is comfortable but not heated or air-conditioned, so students should dress accordingly.
Students do not need to purchase the following list of project materials prior to the first class. Student projects and project sizes will be determined during the first class and students will purchase materials after that. Here is a general idea of what materials may be needed, although the sizes and cost may vary:
1 ea 3/4 x4’x8’ plywood = approx. $89
1 ea 1/4×4’x8’ plywood = approx. $20
50 board feet of 4/4 poplar in the rough @ approx. $2.60/bdft = approx. $130
4 drawer slides – @ approx. $24/each = approx. $96
Total approximate materials cost for student project: $335
